Open Ormeau is an initiative to create more space for safe social distancing and to support local businesses as we move out of lockdown.
The initiative has been created by local residents for the enjoyment of the local community and the benefit of local businesses. The closure of some traffic lanes will enable more space for pedestrians, cyclists and outdoor space for businesses whilst enabling essential through traffic to ensure access for all.
This new proposal has been devised following extensive consultation with local residents and business owners, addressing many of their concerns while providing:
sufficient space for people to walk whilst socially distancing
space for queues outside shops at peak times
space for businesses / organisations, particularly restaurants, cafes and bars to expand outside at weekends so that it is viable for them to open on a table-service-only model whilst upholding social distancing requirements
a safe space for local cycling
an easily navigated space for people who are visually impaired, or who have limited mobility, ensuring access and safety for all members of our community.
